“Bibiana Beglau, the star of The Legend Of Rita, is such a tremendous performer that one roots for her disastrously misguided character—Rita Vogt, a West German terrorist of the nineteen-seventies. A political thriller set in the later years of the Cold War, The Legend Of Rita is a work of fiction. But Volker Schlondorff, the director, and Wolfgang Kohlhaase, who worked with him on the screenplay, have drawn on the comic-sordid history of the Baader-Meinhoff gang, who traded blows with the West German police throughout the seventies. . . Without much emphasis, Schlondorff records the utter dreariness of the workers’ paradise—the ugly, uncomfortable apartments, the sodden imitation of Western pop, the inability of the people at a party to dance with energy… Rita’s not sentimentalized, but she’s not dismissed, either. She remains a deluded but vibrant woman, re-created with love and, at the end, something like a pang of grief.”-The New Yorker
