About the Dunedin Film Society
The Dunedin Film Society is a non-profit incorporated society and a registered charity. It is also a member of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies, a non-commercial distribution network that has been screening films throughout the country for more than 70 years. There are additional film societies in Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Hamilton, as well as in several smaller centres. Each year the Federation screens our combined programmes to an estimated total audience of 25,000.
The New Zealand Federation of Film Societies specialises in screening rare films that might not otherwise be available, including high quality documentaries, short films, Hollywood and international classics, director’s retrospectives and the best of contemporary cinema.
The annual Dunedin Film Society season aims to take you further, in order to extend your understanding and enjoyment of films and film cultures from around the world. Our weekly emailed descriptions of each film include excerpts taken from international and local film criticism that represents a broad range of ideas and beliefs.
Dunedin Film Society membership is open to everyone but censor’s age restrictions apply to films carrying them. We operate on an annual subscription basis because (with just a few exceptions) we have non-commercial screening rights, and must screen to members or 3-Movie Pass holders only. Your annual subscription contributes to programming services, theatre, freight and publicity costs.
A committee of unpaid volunteers that has been selected from the general membership runs every individual film society. The Dunedin Film Society’s management committee is elected at our AGM in March or April each year. Our current management committee consists of Alister McDonald (Vice President and Acting President), Sylvia Wouters (Secretary), Katherine van der Vliet (Treasurer), and a number of other highly valued volunteers.
The Dunedin Film Society would like to thank the University of Otago, Advantage South Ltd and Metro Cinema for their continuing support.
